Greensboro is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina and is the third-largest city by population in the state. It is also the biggest city in Guilford County and the neighbouring Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. Piedmont Triad International Airport lies just west of Greensboro and serves the areas of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem and the whole Piedmont Triad Region in North Carolina. This airport is located just off Bryan Boulevard and is the third busiest airport of the state. To meet the needs of travellers there are plenty of facilities at the airport including car rental outlets.
The city was designed around a central courthouse square to succeed the nearby town of Guilford Court House as the county seat in the year 1808. The city was named after Major General Nathanael Greene, who was commander of the American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15th March, 1781. The city continues to expand in the twentieth century. Some well known industries like Vicks Chemical Co, Carolina Steel Corporation, and Pomona Terra Cotta Works were established. All this led to prosperity of the city and now tourism is growing.
The city has got some good educational institutions such as Bennett College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Guilford Technical Community College, and Greensboro College. The International Civil Rights Centre and Museum is an archival centre and also has a teaching facility. The visitors coming to this city use car hire to see the various sights which the city has to offer such as the Greensboro Historical Museum which has a wide collection of artefacts which date as far back as the Civil War.
Blandwood Mansion is the historical landmark home of the governor John Motley Morehead. It is one of the oldest Tuscan villas in the United States. The Natural Science Centre of Greensboro and the new Animal Discovery Zoological Park is a special attraction for children. The museum features geology, paleontology, and astronomy exhibits and the zoo houses almost everything from reptiles, farm animals, tigers and monkeys. The Greensboro Cultural Centre at Festival Park is also quite popular amongst the tourists.
The War Memorial Auditorium houses the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Greensboro Pops. There are several lakes such as Lake Brandt, Lake Higgins, and Lake Townsend which offer canoeing and kayaking. Lake Higgins also allows fishing and attracts a lot of tourists. Tourists who come here prefer car rental to any other mode of transport and this is partly because it is a relatively inexpensive way to travel.
