Hilo is the largest town on the island of Hawaii and is very close to two volcanoes – Mauna Kea which is now dormant and Mauna Loa which is still active. There are plenty of attractions in this part of the state and visitors to the area will not be short of things to do while they are there. Exploring the area and the island is so much easier with car rental and much more comfortable.
A popular area of the city is Banyan Drive. All the top hotels are based here and there are banyan trees all along the road. These were often planted by dignitaries such as famous politicians and sportsmen. Alternatively you can try the Naniloa Country Club, which is a small golf course and great for those who want to get a round in while they are on the island. Those who are interested in spiritual healing should take a trip to Coconut Island, which also goes by the name of Mokuola. The island is thought to have spring waters with healing powers and many people come just to enjoy a picnic in the tranquil surroundings.
The Botanical Gardens at Onomea Bay are also a popular tourist attraction. These are just north of Hilo and easy to reach with car hire. There are trails to follow throughout the garden and visitors will find themselves in a number of different environments including a fern forest, palm jungles and coconut groves. The trails will take you past great views of the ocean on several occasions. Other gardens on the island include the Nani Mau Gardens. This is a total of 53 acres and there are plenty of different garden types here including fruit orchards and orchid gardens.
To enjoy some of the local produce there is the Hilo Farmer’s Market. There are more than 100 stalls here of crafts, flowers, gifts, fruits and vegetables and it is a great place to find a bargain. The market is open every Wednesday and Saturday. Alternatively take a stroll through the downtown area of the city where there are plenty of historic buildings and interesting shops.
Hilo car rental can save both time and money as you can go where you like when you like and there is no need to ever wait for a bus. Enjoy air conditioned comfort as you explore this most beautiful part of the world and see everything that the region has to offer.
