Charleston is the second largest city in the U.S state of South Carolina, second to the largest city of Columbia, and is the county seat of the modern day Charleston County. Charleston International Airport is one of the busiest in the region. Charleston is sometimes referred to as The Holy City, which is perhaps because of the prominence of churches in the city centre however, the state of Carolina was among the few original thirteen colonies on the Atlantic Coast to encourage religious tolerance, albeit restricted to non-Roman Catholics.
The city of Charleston is situated just south of the midpoint of South Carolina’s Atlantic coastline. It is located at the meeting point of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, which meet and then flow together into the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston Harbour lies between the Atlantic Ocean and downtown Charleston and the harbour is situated on the inlet, which like most inlets on the South coast is evidence of a drowned coastline, caused by the rising sea levels in recent years. By taking advantage of low cost car rental it is possible to visit all of these places and more at your own convenience.
The city is divided into six districts including the Peninsula or Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Peninsula. Charleston used to be named Charles Towne, as it was named after King Charles ll of England.
The climate in the city is described as a humid subtropical climate and the city experiences mild winters, hot and humid summers as well as significant rainfall throughout the year. The summer months are the wettest, due to the amount of thundershowers and the winters are short and mild, with very seldom snow flurries occurring throughout the season. The average daily highs in the summer months are around 32°C and go down to around 15°C in winter.
The area is very badly affected by hurricanes, with several hitting the area during the summer and early fall months. Most notable was Hurricane Hugo which devastated the coast on the 21st of September 1989.
There is plenty to do in the city and many festivals and celebrations that take place throughout the year. Charleston is host to the annual Spoleto Festival USA which was founded by Gian Carlo Menotti and is carried out over 17 days. This art festival features over 100 performances by individual artists in a variety of differing performances and is internationally recognised as America’s premier performing arts festival. It is held at the same time every year and the performances by the artists take place all over the city.
