Kapalua Maui airport is a small airport with a medium sized terminal with one and support facilities on the west of Maui Island six miles from Lahaina. It is used by commuter planes that ferry more than 50,000 passengers yearly. Kapalua is not directly accessible to commercial airlines due to its small capacity. Therefore, it can only be accessed by using commuter planes from other major islands in Hawaii. Plans to upgrade this airport to a general airport are underway. To reach the airport from the Hanoapiilani highway, one has to branch off to the two-lane road along the highway.
AIRLINES SERVING THE KAPAULA AIRPORT
There are two airlines that facilitate transportation of tourists to and from the island to other major islands, they are: -Mokulele Airlines and Island air. When landing, the co-pilot and pilot are responsible for off-loading and carrying your luggage to the terminal building. Here, a cart will receive them to be collected after they are searched.
The Kapalua airport is quite small, therefore, there are fewer facilities compared to larger airports. The available facilities include a restaurant and bar, a small floral shop selling lei flower arrangement for incoming visitors, car rental, phone booths to call for a free shuttle bus to ferry you to their offices or a pickup point and a luggage claim department situated outside the terminal building. The airport also has a 24hr parking bay that is paid for and open to the public. Vending machines have been provided for newspapers, drinks and snacks.
TO AND FOM THE AIRPORT
To get into and out of the airport one has to use the services of a shuttle since all car rental companies do not have desks within the airport. As stated earlier, you can use any of the telephone booths provided by car rental services within the terminal to call the company of your choice to send their buses to pick you up and take you to their offices where you can rent a car. They will require your driver’s license from your country of origin, passport and insurance. You have to be over 21 to be eligible to hire a car.
Most car hire services are available from 6:00am and 5:00pm. If you want services past this time then you can use the other forms of transportation like taxis which operate 24hours seven days a week. Almost all companies provide special fitted cars for those people with special needs. It is important to keep in mind that there are not many cars available for hire so one has to pre arrange for one before arriving.
