The city of McAllen is situated in the US state of Texas and it is the largest city in Hidalgo County. The area around the city was largely dependent on agriculture for much of its history since it was founded in 1904. The second half of the 20th century was marked by the city’s steady growth, which accelerated through the 90’s and early 2000.
The city has been nicknamed the City of Palms due to its palm fringed main streets in the city centre however many of the trees in the suburbs are not of tropical origin or appearance. Some of the trees in the neighbourhoods include Rio Grande Ash, Cedar Elm, Sugarberry and Honey Mesquite and in the winter months, when the trees are bare the city’s surroundings areas and suburbs take on a much more temperate appearance.
The climate in the city of McAllen is described as a semi-arid climate, with warm seasons that are extremely long and with average highs of 32°C and lows of around 21°C. While during the winter months the average daily highs reach 20°C and the lows drop down to around 9°C. September is the peak time in the Atlantic Hurricane season and tropical storms and hurricanes do occasionally drop very large amounts of rainfall in the region and it is safe to say that September is the wettest month.

The McAllen Dog Park is also very popular with the residents, who have canine pets. This well-lit park is located off Tamarack and 2nd street and is divided into two sections, one side for little dogs and another for bigger dogs. This well-maintained friendly park is open until 10pm every night.
The 2nd street bike path is another place in the city to enjoy a stroll or ride your bicycle. The path stretches for several miles and runs from North to South on McAllen’s east side and is lined with beautiful trees and the occasional marker that lets you know where you are.
McAllen has become Rio Grande Valley’s nightlife and entertainment capital, as in 2007 the city as well the Heart of the City formulated a project to revitalize downtown McAllen with an entertainment strip. This strip is today known as the 17th Street Entertainment District and draws thousands from all over the Rio Grande Valley who are looking for great nightlife.
The City is served by McAllen Airport which is around 3.2km away from the city centre. There are several car rental outlets at the airport and in the city and many visitors to the region find that this is the best way to see all the sights and attractions on offer.
